The attitude we take toward the future can be placed on a continuum between despair and hope. In the future, we find possibilities. The visions, vocations, and commitments that give our lives meaning and fill us with hope are connected to our images of the future--what I call "future stories."
In these future stories, the temptation to despair is most dangerous. To nurture hope, we must attend to the stories that that humans create about the future. How people consider the not-yet is crucial to their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
